This name has an Aboriginal origin and is believed to mean “Sunrise”. The area developed as a suburb in the 1970’s. Much of this area was originally farming land renowned for its piggeries, but part of it was the Somerville Pine Plantation and University of Western Australia Endowment Land. Many University personnel are commemorated in the streets of this suburb.
